The Purpose of The Friends of Rural Roads is to preserve the gravel roads that remain in Frederick County, Maryland, and to support efforts to include other rural roads, that qualify, into the program so that the scenic and historical elements of the agricultural and forested rural landscape is protected.

Our gravel roads are county gems - a combination of quiet majestic nature and a walk back in time to a simpler place. Many of these roads meander along the county's streams giving the traveler an opportunity to see, smell, and hear some of the quiet treasures that still abound.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both...
l took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Robert Frost

In the midst of unbridled residential development and massive highway construction... it is increasingly important to preserve our county natural and historical treasures, and the lacework of rustic roads that quietly connect them. Our rural roads invite leisurely travel through unspoiled countryside, and provide insights into earlier, gentler life ways.
